Fiercely protective of their ancestral territory, the Shuar have consistently resisted threats to their way of life—from fighting Incan and Spanish conquest in the 15th and 16th centuries to resisting modern-day extractive industries (“Why the Struggles”). However, despite their resilience, centuries of colonization, forced assimilation, and environmental degradation have undermined their autonomy and cultural identity. Today, the dual threat of cultural extinction and ecological devastation—driven by mining and deforestation—continues to endanger their existence.
